There were actually a few yard sales lingering around last weekend. We've enjoyed some spectacular non-fall weather lately, so it still wasn't too late to catch a few sales. I happened across one, where I bought this piece of furniture for 10 dollars.
I love it, but need help figuring out (1) what color to paint it, and (2) what room to use it in. In other words, what shall I fill all those lovely baskets with??
At the same yard sale, I was browsing through a box of books. I heard some other people exclaim "Calvin & Hobbes!" and I immediately took action. Right at my feet, were four Calvin & Hobbes books, in perfect condition. I snatched them up. To be fair, the other people were talking about some other Calvin & Hobbes books, where they were standing. So I didn't steal anything from anyone, I just prevented them from obtaining MORE of these precious books.
I have great memories of reading these books, when I was a kid. I was thrilled to share that experience with my kids. The best part of the day was that these books sold for a quarter a piece!! Bargain! So, excitedly, I brought home my bounty. Immediately, the kids started reading them. I could hear them laughing outloud, for the rest of the afternoon.
(Yes, this picture was re-created for my blog audience, but in no way depicts falsehoods.)
The books have even inspired some artwork around the house. It's a refreshing change from jedi fights and lightsabers.
So tell me, what I should do with my basket shelf??

calvin and hobbes = my favorite cartoon series EVER. i am still in mourning for the artist who decided to stop… whaaaaa. seriously my favoritest ever in the entire world.
hmm. i love the basket holder… red? turquoise? white framework and different color(s) for baskets?
the nice thing is you can always repaint!
i could fill that up in a heartbeat.
i would also make basket liners in a really fun fabric.
yummmo!
That would be great in a bathroom for brushes, hairties, random bottles of lotion, washcloths, etc. Or, there are always the gazillion tiny toys the kids have that they dump whole boxes of toys out to find at the bottom. You could put them in there. Let us see the finished project!
I actually really like the look of wood. So sand it down and find a stain you like?
I have been looking for a piece of furniture like that to put all my music in by my piano. What a lucky find!
Where are you going to put your sewing machine in your new house? Could you possibly carve out a little 'crafting nook' and use these lovely drawers for supplies? I can see them filled with ribbon, fabric scraps, papers or scrapping stuff, or kids art supplies...
That wonderful piece of furniture would probably go in my sewing room to hold zippers, thread, etc..... But, I could also see it in my bedroom to hold scarves, jewelry, etc... Or how about in the dining room to hold silverware, cloth napkins, etc... Or in the bathroom to hold extra wash rags, lotions, makeup, etc... Or, next to the computer to hold paper, pens, other office stuff. Gosh the uses could be endless!
I see sewing stuff in those baskets, although "Reynolds Family" (my fun friend from college) has a great idea! I, too, have been scouring the earth for something like that. Haven't found anything for 10 times what you paid!
hhmmm, I would say you could use it for sewing supplies, but it would also look cute in a bathroom filled with all of the bathroom stuff that seems to clutter the counter. I am sure that whatever you do with it will be very fun and cute. Can't wait to see the outcome!
I could use something that big to sort the stuff I usually just term 'junk drawer'. Different kinds of cords, office supplies, Spare notebooks, art supplies, re-usable party decotations, Tape and scissors, lightbulbs, Sooo many things that need a place!
I have daughters so I would definantly use it in the bathroom for hair supplies and extra stuff that don't have a place! And I would love to see it tourquise or yellow.
It depends on what your need is..
Sweing room would be great, so would the bathroom. But I think it would use it to store markers, papers crayons, glue tape or whatever the kids need for homework, Then place it in the room they do homework in..
Hmmm. I agree that would be perfect for the sewing room, bathroom, or for music. I think a nice rustic ebony finish would be lovely with that color of basket, especially if you lined them with stylin' fabric and covered the handles with coordinating fabric.
Oh and Calvin and Hobbes is far and away my all time favorite cartoon. I've started a small collection of my own. Way to score!
My boys LOVE Calvin and Hobbes...the biggest one included. Zach's teacher read them one every day last year, and it was all over from there. Great find. And very cute basket drawer thing too! Is it in bad condition that it needs painting? It's not too bad au natural!
One of my favorite emails I ever received are some of the Calvin & Hobbes cartoons. If you send me your email address, I'll forward it to you, they are all Christmas/snow related, so we're in the correct season. :) And I suggest possibly using that AWESOME drawer in the bathroom to separate all the kiddo crap? Definitely perfect for separating various girlie hair ties and whatnot. Post a pic once you've painted/stained it and tell us what you chose to do with it!!
Sorry, I didn't count the number of baskets, but I immediately thought that you could paint or stain the frame and make cute basket liners. Label each basket with a different child's name and let it be a catch-all for each of them. At the end of every couple of days, have them clean it out. It will help to teach them about cleaning up after themselves. My mom did something similar for us.
Great find!
