What Would You Do?

Kamy found a 50 dollar bill on the road, as she was walking home from school today. It was about a half mile from our house, on a busy road. Kamy said she saw it folded up, and there were no cars, so she walked out into the road and picked it up. Of course, she had no idea it was such a large amount of money.

It would be impossible to find the owner. If she found a wallet, it would be a different story. As it is, Heath and I are inclined to let her keep the money. What would you do?

If you called the police they would either tell her to keep it (because it would be impossible to find the correct owner) or take it and hold on to it for 2 weeks in case someone called saying they lost it. If no one claimed it they would give it to her. The only problem I have experienced with that is the police department actually lost the $100 bill my brother found and we talked him into turning in for the 2 week time period. They lost it and lied to him. Years later, one of the officers let it slip that it had disappeared from the evidence locker and they all just decided to tell him the owner had shown up.

Basically - let her keep it and enjoy her good fortune. If someone puts up fliers then make a decision then.

Not much help, huh? Sorry. I hope her luck continues!

It would be different if there was identification with it. I guess you can just keep it around a week to see if you hear anyone asking about it. I know that's what my dad made me do with the money I found eons ago. Waiting or not, Either way she'll get to keep it. After all what are the odds that someone will be asking about it. How exciting for her. Lucky girl.

I think she ought to let the school know she found the money in case anyone reports it missing there, and if no one claims it within in a week or so, then she gets to enjoy it!

I would let her keep it, but put it in the bank or something. What an eye she has!!!

You could have her donate a portion of it to something she cares about as a good will gesture for such great luck! Way to go Kamy! I don't think you could really find the owner.

Let her keep it - if I found loose money on the road (which I have a few times) I would definitely keep it.

I wouldn't make her donate it--I'd let her keep it. Lucky find!

You could do what dad did whenever we found money.. give it to him and wait for the pizza he said we would buy with it.

I bet some kid got into his moms purse and gave himself a payday, then lost it on the way to school.

I say keep it and make sure she pays her tithing on it.

I agree that it would be to hard to track down the owner.

I think she should keep it.

The only thing I would do is verify at the bank it is real. By our house there was an incident that fake money was being left out and then people would use it and of course it wasn't real - bummer someone would do something so cruel :(

I would let her keep it. I have never been so lucky as to find money. I bet she was so excited. I would suggest that she put it in the bank or something, and also suggest that she pay her tithing on it. I do not think that you guys would be able to find the owner of the money. Yay Kamyren!!

I think totally let her keep it! She told you guys about it, there's apparently no way to find out who it belongs to, enjoy! -e

It's her reward for being such a great girl!

I say let her keep it, how could you find the owners? If I lost money I would look in a few places then let it go. Use it as a lesson how important it is to keep money in a place you won't lose it otherwise someone else will get to enjoy it. hugs from texas!

I think that the comment about letting the school know is probably your best shot at finding an owner, but if they haven't had any inquiries, there's no way you'll ever find the owner. Then- good times for Kamy!

I would let her keep it as well.

I am curious to see what she does with it if she does get to keep it.

Wow! What a find! I think I would do what you are doing. I don't think there is anything else you could do other than wait a few weeks to hear if someone mentions it, or posts it or something.

Lucky girl! I wish I found $50 lying around! Let us know how she spends her fortune.

i'd let her keep it but encourage her to find some way to bless someone by it. or something along those lines. (sort of like an oprah experiment)
it's a good lesson on unexpected treasures being used to be a windfall to many, and she'll remember it forever!
hope she has fun with it!

I would probably be weird about it. I'd give My Girl a very hard time, tell her she had to give it to me, at least half, she should call the police or go door to door or stand on the corner with a big sign saying she found fifty bucks asking for a detailed description of the bill and serial number from any claimants, tell her to just give it to me, and then I'd probably just advise her to pay tithing and keep the rest. :)
